At Kelp Forest Wellness Collective, our Dry Cedar Sauna offers a dedicated, predictable sanctuary where you can step away from demands, regulate your nervous system, and safely let your body drop its armor.
If you have never used a sauna before, or if the idea of booking or dropping into a new space brings up anxiety about the unknown, this guide is for you. We have mapped out every single detail of how our sauna works so your brain can preview the entire experience with zero surprises.
WHY SAUNA THERAPY MATTERS FOR THE NEURODIVERGENT NERVOUS SYSTEM
- Deep Autonomic Down-Regulation: The enveloping heat forces your nervous system out of chronic fight-or-flight and into a rest-and-digest state. As your blood vessels dilate, your heart rate slows into a rhythmic, deeply grounding state.
- Predictable Dry Thermal Input: Unlike humid steam rooms, our dry cedar sauna provides a clean, dry heat maintained at 120°F–150°F (48°C–65°C) for steady, comfortable warmth.
- Contrast Hydrotherapy for Sensory Resets: Switching between the warm sauna and a crisp, cold shower acts as a quick “reboot” button for executive dysfunction, helping flush nervous system fatigue and clear brain fog.
- Passive Tension & Muscle Unmasking: Deep heat penetrates tight muscle tissues without requiring physical touch or conversation, melting the physical bracing caused by day-long masking.
IMPORTANT HEALTH & SAFETY BASELINES
While heat therapy is deeply healing for many, high temperatures place distinct physiological demands on the body. Sauna use is strictly prohibited or requires prior clearance from a physician for individuals meeting any of the following criteria:
Age & Medical Conditions
- Under the Age of 18: Individuals under 18 may not use the sauna, as younger bodies do not regulate heat and thermoregulation in the same way adults do.
- Pregnancy or Nursing: High heat can pose risks to fetal development and alter core body temperature rapidly.
- Electrical or Battery-Operated Implants: Anyone with a pacemaker, defibrillator, or other electrical/battery-operated implant should not use the sauna.
- Cardiovascular Issues: Including high or low blood pressure, a history of heart attack, angina, or other severe cardiovascular conditions.
- Active Illness & Injuries: Do not use the sauna if you currently have a fever, infection, open wound, or acute joint injury (within the first 48 hours).
- Neurological & Circulatory Conditions: A history of dizziness, fainting spells, heat insensitivity, narcolepsy, seizures, hemophilia, or other bleeding disorders.
- Conditions Affecting Sweating: Conditions that impair the body’s natural ability to perspire (such as Multiple Sclerosis, Central Nervous System tumors, or severe Diabetic Neuropathy).
Contraindicated Medications & Substances
Heat causes blood vessels to dilate and increases heart rate. Certain medications can interfere with your body’s ability to sweat, regulate temperature, or maintain stable blood pressure:
- Blood Pressure & Heart Medications (Beta-Blockers, Diuretics, ACE Inhibitors): Can impair natural cooling responses, increase dehydration, or cause sudden blood pressure drops (dizziness/fainting).
- Anticholinergics & Antidepressants (Tricyclics like Amitriptyline): Can directly inhibit sweating, leaving you prone to heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
- Antihistamines (Over-the-Counter Allergy Meds): Can impair normal thermoregulation and sweating mechanisms.
- Transdermal Patches: High ambient heat accelerates the absorption rate of transdermal drug patches (such as pain relief or hormone patches), which can cause unsafe dosing.
- Alcohol, Recreational Drugs, & Heavy Meals: Do not consume alcohol or drugs immediately before or after your session. Avoid eating large, heavy meals right before stepping into the heat.
If you are currently taking any prescription medications or have concerns about a medical condition, please consult your doctor before booking.
OUR “NO-SURPRISES” SENSORY PROTOCOLS
Because unpredictable triggers can turn relaxation into sensory overload, we have built our setup around clarity and choice:
- Two Ways to Experience the Sauna:
- Private Sessions: The door is closed with a “Do Not Disturb” sign for your entire 60-minute booking. It includes up to 4 people (with the option to add up to 2 more).
- Drop-In Sessions: While these are often quiet and relatively private, other people are allowed to drop in and share the space with you. If sharing a room creates sensory anxiety or unpredictability for you, booking a Private Session is the best choice!
- Temperature & Airflow: The sauna operates at a steady 120°F–150°F (48°C–65°C). The heater itself is fixed, but you can adjust the air temperature by opening or closing the built-in sliding vent window.
- Eucalyptus & Aromatic Control: We provide a spray bottle with eucalyptus oil and filtered water to spray on the heated rocks. To prevent the bottle from overheating and leaching plastic compounds or microplastics into the water, please keep the bottle outside on the hooks by the shower when you aren’t actively using it.

FINDING YOUR RHYTHM: SAUNA ROUTINES & ACTIVITIES
Sauna culture isn’t one-size-fits-all, and your nervous system may crave different inputs on different days. There is no “right” length of time to stay inside—the goal is absolute comfort, not endurance.
Popular Sauna & Cold Contrast Rhythms
Contrast therapy (moving between hot thermal heat and crisp cold water) is a powerful tool for regulating the nervous system, clearing executive dysfunction brain fog, and releasing muscle bracing.
- The Gentle Reset (Beginner / High-Sensory Sensitivity):
- 8–10 mins: Dry Cedar Sauna (sit on the lower bench where the air is milder)
- 1–2 mins: Room-temperature or lukewarm shower to gently cool down without shocking your system
- 5 mins: Rest outside the sauna, sip water, and let your heart rate settle
- Repeat 1–2 times.
- The Classic Contrast (High Dopamine & Sensory Reboot):
- 10–15 mins: Dry Cedar Sauna (higher bench for deeper heat)
- 2–3 mins: Crisp, cold shower (focus the water on the back of your neck and chest to trigger the vagus nerve)
- 5–10 mins: Rest wrapped in a towel or robe while sipping your cold beverage
- Repeat 2–3 times.
- The Slow Heat Soak (Deep Muscle Release & Unmasking):
- 15–20 mins: Continuous, steady heat soak without cold shock
- End with: A warm-to-cool rinse shower at the very end
- Best for severe muscle tension, chronic joint stiffness, or when your nervous system feels too fragile for cold shocks.

WHAT YOU CAN DO INSIDE THE SAUNA
Because our sauna is a low-demand, judgment-free space, how you spend your time inside is entirely up to you:
- Stimming & Unmasking: You are completely free to rock, stretch, shake out your hands, or adopt whatever posture feels most relieving to your joints and muscles without social pressure.
- Gentle Thermal Mobility: The deep thermal energy softens fascia and connective tissue. Slow neck rolls, gentle shoulder drops, jaw releases, or light hamstring stretches feel incredible in heat.
- Breathwork & Nervous System Anchors: Practice extended-exhale breathing (e.g., inhale for 4 seconds, exhale for 7 seconds) to actively signal to your vagus nerve that you are completely safe.
- Low-Stimulus Resting: Close your eyes, lean back against your towel, and focus purely on the grounding scent of dry cedar and the predictable rise of warmth on your skin.
- Tactile Sweeping: Use a dry or cold wet face cloth to gently sweep sweat off your arms and legs. This provides a crisp, satisfying tactile input that helps ground your body in space (proprioception).
YOUR PRIVATE SESSION ROADMAP

When you book a private session, you have 100% control of the room for 60 minutes.
1. ENTER & PREP
- Arrival: Check in at the front desk 5–10 minutes early, remove your shoes at the entrance, and put on sanitized slides, socks, or go barefoot. You can pay either before or after your session.
- Step Into Your Space: Head into the sauna suite. At the very back is your private change room.
- Your Amenities Provided: Stacked neatly on the bench, you will find:
- 1 plush robe
- 1 face cloth & 2 frozen face cloths (great for cooling your forehead or neck!)
- 2 large towels & 1 hand towel
- 1 hair headband (to keep hair off your face)
- Sanitized black slides
- A jar of cool Guava Coconut Water with cups

2. SHOWER & ENTER
- Undress and put on a swimsuit or light sauna clothing.
- Head to the shower and do a quick pre-sauna wash. We provide our organic Seaflora Sea-to-Skin Body Wash, or you are welcome to bring your own.
- Put on your robe if you’d like (it’s completely optional!) and step into the sauna.
- Towel Rules: Place one of your medium/large towels on the wood bench to sit on, and lay another down under your feet.
3. CONTRAST & REFRESH
- Move between the hot sauna and cold shower as many times as you like! A popular rhythm is 10 minutes in the sauna followed by 2–3 minutes under the cool shower.
- Beverage Rule: Please leave the sauna to drink your cold guava coconut water. Keeping beverages outside keeps our sauna pristine and ensures your drink stays icy cold!
- Place a frozen face cloth on your neck or forehead whenever you need a crisp sensory reset.
4. WRAP UP
- Take a final shower to rinse off.
- Place all wet towels, robes, face cloths, or bath rugs directly into the hamper at the back.
- Get dressed. If you need a bag for your wet swimsuit, just ask us at the front desk before or after your session, or bring your own.

YOUR DROP-IN SESSION ROADMAP
Drop-in sessions offer a flexible, shared wellness space.
1. ENTER & CHANGE
- Arrive, remove your shoes at the front, and walk to the sauna suite.
- Head to the back change room and slide the door closed for complete privacy while changing.
- Put on your swimsuit or light sauna clothing.
- Shared Space Etiquette: Please fold your dry clothing neatly and place it inside your bag or in a neat pile on the bench rather than on the floor so the change space stays clean and comfortable for everyone. Slide the door open when you are done, for the next person.

2. SENSORY & SHOWER PREP
- Step out to the tall shelf in the shower area. Here you will find rolled face cloths, hand towels, and body towels.
- Grab 1–2 hand towels to bring into the sauna, one to sit on, and one for under your feet or behind your back.
- Feel free to grab a face cloth to wipe away sweat, or run it under cold water in the shower to keep your face cool.
- Take a shower using our Seaflora Body Wash (or your own) before entering the sauna.
3. DURING YOUR SESSION
- Hydration & Breaks: A filtered water cooler with cups is located directly outside the sauna door, and washrooms are easily accessible down the hall whenever you need a break.
- Using Eucalyptus Water Spray: You are welcome to use the eucalyptus spray on the rocks! Just remember to return the bottle to the hooks outside by the shower when you are done so it doesn’t overheat inside the sauna.
- Alternate between heat and cold showers as often as your body needs.
4. CLEAN UP
- Take a final rinse in the shower.
- Place all used towels and face cloths in the hamper.
- Change back into your clothes, slide the change room door open for the next person, and pay at the front desk on your way out!
