Trying a new therapy or stepping into an unfamiliar room can trigger sensory fatigue and anxiety, especially when you don’t know what to expect. This guide walks you through every detail of our PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field) Mat Therapy so you can feel completely prepared, in control, and comfortable before your session.

1. Booking Your Session & Arrival

Getting started is simple, flexible, and completely friction-free:

  • Flexible Booking Options: You can book your appointment online in advance at kelpforestwellness.com/book-pemf/. If you prefer not to use online booking systems, you are always welcome to call us ahead of time to check room availability or reserve your spot over the phone.
  • Drop-Ins Welcome: Because PEMF requires no special preparation or intake forms, drop-in sessions are always welcome based on room availability.
  • No Intake Forms: There are no long questionnaires or intake forms to fill out when you arrive.
  • Payment Options: While you can pay online ahead of time, most clients prefer to pay in store when they arrive.
  • Transition Time: We invite you to arrive 5 to 10 minutes early to sit in our reception area, unburden your mind, and transition smoothly out of the busyness of your day.

2. Hygiene, Cleanliness & Layered Comfort

We take sanitation and comfort very seriously so you can fully relax knowing everything is fresh and clean:

  • Multi-Layered Bedding Hygiene:
    • The HealthyLine PEMF Mat sits on top of an extra supportive base layer on the treatment bed.
    • Over the mat is a wipeable, medical-grade plastic protective cover that is thoroughly disinfected with hospital-grade cleaner after every single client.
    • Freshly laundered fitted sheets, top sheets, and pillowcases are put on the bed for every session.
  • SmartGoggles Sanitation: The Therabody SmartGoggles face-contact surface is fully sanitized and disinfected between every user.
  • Earthy Comfort: A heavy plush emerald-green blanket sits on top, and a supportive pillow is tucked under the fitted sheet directly where your knees rest to relieve lower back and joint pressure.

3. The Room Setup & Sensory Profile

Inside the private room, everything is designed to be low-stimulation and quiet:

  • Dimmable Overhead Lighting: The main light is fully dimmable. You can adjust it to a low, warm glow or turn it down completely.
  • Under-Sheet Photon Glow: You will notice a gentle red glow shining through the white top sheet. This comes from the HealthyLine mat’s built-in red light/photon therapy nodes, adding a soothing visual warmth without overhead glare.
  • Silent Operation: The PEMF mat operates completely silently—no mechanical humming, clicking, or sudden noises.
  • Stool for Personal Belongings: A smooth, rolling stool is positioned right beside the bed for your phone, keys, and personal items.

4. How to Operate the Equipment (Standard Settings & Adjustments)

When you walk into the room, both the mat and the SmartGoggles will already be turned on and pre-set to our recommended standard settings. You can simply lie down and enjoy your session without touching a button. However, if you want to customize your experience, here is how the controls work:

The HealthyLine PEMF Mat Remote

The mat will be running at our standard settings (gentle warmth at ~100°F–110°F, 7.83 Hz Earth-frequency PEMF, and photon light active). If you wish to change settings using the wired remote resting on the stool beside the bed:

  • Power Button (Top Right): Turns the mat on or off.
  • TEMP: Press this button, then use the (+) or (-) buttons to raise or lower the heat level.
  • PEMF: Toggles the electromagnetic field on or off, or adjusts frequency settings.
  • PHOTON: Turns the visible red photon lights on or off.
  • TIME: Adjusts session duration (pre-set for your booked time).

The Therabody SmartGoggles Gen 2

The SmartGoggles rest on the stool beside the bed. They combine gentle eye massage, heat, and vibration to lower your heart rate. Because the buttons on the goggles are minimalist, here is a clear guide to how they work:

  • Where the Buttons Are: All control buttons are located along the top edge of the goggle frame.
  • Power & SmartRelax Mode (Power Icon Button):
    • Press & Hold: Turns the goggles ON or OFF.
    • Single Click: Cycles through the 3 built-in modes:
      1. SmartRelax (Recommended): Uses a built-in biometric heart-rate sensor to gently adjust vibration patterns to lower your heart rate.
      2. Focus: Uses targeted temple massage and gentle heat to ease headache tension and brain fog.
      3. Sleep: Uses slow, rhythmic wave massage over the eyes to encourage deep rest.
  • Vibration Control (Three Wave Lines Icon Button): Single-click to cycle through 3 vibration intensity levels (Low, Medium, High) or turn vibration off.
  • Heat Control (Thermometer Icon Button): Single-click to cycle through 3 heat settings (Low, Medium, High) or turn off the heat entirely.

5. Why PEMF? Deep Benefits for Neurodivergence & Hypermobility

Pulsed Electromagnetic Field therapy works by sending gentle, natural magnetic waves through your body to recharge your cells’ electrical potential (boosting ATP production). While anyone can benefit from PEMF, it is uniquely transformative for neurodivergent individuals (Autism/ADHD), those managing anxiety, and folks with hypermobility (EDS/HSD):

1. Nervous System Down-Regulation & Brainwave Entrainment

For Autistic adults, ADHDers, and folks with chronic anxiety, the nervous system is often stuck in hyper-vigilant “fight-or-flight” (sympathetic state). The HealthyLine mat emits a 7.83 Hz frequency—matching the natural electromagnetic pulse of the Earth (Schumann Resonance). This frequency naturally encourages your brain waves to slow down into relaxing Alpha and Theta states, quieting racing thoughts without cognitive effort.

2. Soothing Hypermobile Joints & Connective Tissue

Hypermobility spectrum disorders and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) often mean chronic joint instability, frequent micro-tears, and perpetual muscle guarding (where muscles stay tight to compensate for loose ligaments). PEMF therapy:

  • Reduces Micro-Inflammation: Directly down-regulates inflammatory pain signals deep inside hypermobile joints.
  • Improves Microcirculation: Increases blood flow and oxygen delivery to tight, overworked muscles so they can finally disengage and rest.
  • Supports Collagen Synthesis: Stimulates cellular repair in connective tissues over time.

3. Burnout & “Autistic/ADHD Fatigue” Recovery

Masking and navigating a neurotypical world consume vast amounts of cellular energy. By increasing membrane permeability and helping your mitochondria generate ATP, PEMF acts like a silent wireless charger for your body, helping you recover from deep burnout.

4. Zero Sensory Friction

There is no human touch, no sticky gel, no need to undress, and no unpredictable noises. You stay fully clothed under a plush blanket in total control of your environment.

6. Safety & Precautions

Because PEMF uses magnetic fields, please keep these safety rules in mind:

  • Electronics Off the Mat: Please place your cell phone, smartwatch, wireless earbuds, and credit cards on the rolling stool beside the bed, away from the mat itself.
  • Strict Contraindications: PEMF therapy cannot be used by anyone with an implanted electronic device (such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, cochlear implant, or insulin pump) or during pregnancy.

Quick Sensory Checklist for Your Visit

  • Wear Comfortable Clothes: Sweatpants, soft shirts, and cozy socks make your session effortless.
  • Knee Support Included: The built-in knee cushion under the sheet automatically takes pressure off your lower back.
  • Pace Yourself: You can lie on your back, rest on your side, wear the SmartGoggles, or leave them off. There is no “right way” to relax—listen to what your body needs.
