Living in a world built for neurotypical brains requires an immense amount of cognitive and physical energy. For many Autistic and ADHD adults, this results in a constant state of “masking”, the exhausting, often subconscious effort to suppress natural behaviors, fidgets, or stims to fit into social environments.
Masking doesn’t just drain your mind; it lives in your muscles, locking up the jaw, neck, shoulders, and lower back. At Kelp Forest Wellness Collective, we don’t see bodywork as a tool to “fix” you; we view it as a dedicated, predictable sanctuary where your nervous system can safely drop its armor and fully unmask.
If you have never stepped foot in a wellness clinic, or if the idea of booking a massage brings up anxiety about the unknown, this guide is for you. We have mapped out exactly what your first visit will look like so your brain can preview the environment with zero surprises.
WHY BODYWORK MATTERS FOR THE NEURODIVERGENT NERVOUS SYSTEM
- Decompressing the “Masking Tax”:
- Chronic muscle bracing from staying on guard all day can finally be safely processed and released through targeted physical touch.
- Deep Pressure Stimulation
- Firm, predictable, and rhythmic pressure acts exactly like a weighted blanket, signaling your sympathetic nervous system to step down from a “fight-or-flight” state.
- Sensory Regulation Overhaul
- Roughly 96% of autistic individuals process sensory inputs uniquely. A structured, customized massage provides a gentle, predictable sensory baseline that calms overall neurological arousal.
- The Power of Lymphatic Drainage
- Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) targeting the deep cervical neck nodes can help optimize fluid flow, which may actively soothe neuro-inflammation and support overall brain health.
- We offer specialized Lymphatic Body and Lymphatic Facial sessions specifically to assist with high stress, puffiness, and nervous system resets.
OUR “NO-SURPRISES” SENSORY PROTOCOLS
Because unpredictable sensory triggers can ruin a therapeutic session, we have standardized our environment around absolute sensory safety:
- The “Clean Body” Protocol
- To ensure a safe, comfortable, and hygienic environment for both you and our providers, we ask all clients to arrive with a clean, freshly showered body. This eliminates unexpected tactile anomalies and establishes a fresh sensory start for your session.
- Unscented Fractionated Coconut Oil
- While we are incredibly proud of our all-natural, mineral-dense, organic Seaflora Skincare products, we recognize that olfactory sensitivities run high. Therefore, our default massage medium is 100% unscented fractionated coconut oil to protect you from unexpected perfume triggers.
- Absolute Environmental Control
- You hold the remote to the room. You can request entirely blacked-out lighting, a completely silent session (no talking required), or specific white noise.

YOUR VISIT ROADMAP
1. ENTER:
Check In At The Front Desk

When you first enter Kelp Forest Wellness Collective, 5-10 minutes before your appointment, please remove your shoes for hygiene and cleanliness reasons and place them in a cubby or on the tray under the bench.
You can choose a pair of black slide sandals to wear, or walk in your socks/bare feet. The slides are sanitized after every use.
If no one is at the front desk, they are currently working in another location or are in the washroom, please say a loud “Hello!” to let us know you are here, and wait for a receptionist who will take your name and check you in.
If you have not filled out an intake form online, you will be given the iPad to fill out your intake form. If you require assistance with this, our receptionist would be happy to help you. If you would like, we also have a sensory intake form that can be completed with a dry-erase pen for your therapist.

Sit down on a chair or the bench by the door until your therapist is ready to greet you. She will introduce herself and bring you to your private treatment room.

If you would like to use the washroom before your treatment, you can find it by walking down the hallway on either side of the reception desk, the doors will be open on both sides. There is a small stall and a wheelchair accessible stall. Both have a bottle of poo-pourri spray that you can spray on the toilet water before flushing to reduce odours.

When you have washed your hands, there are clean white cloths to dry off with. When you have finished using your cloth, please put it in the black basket under the counter to be washed. If you need a garbage can, there are small garbages in each bathroom.
If you would like water before your treatment, there is a filtered water cooler to the right of the reception desk with cups on top. You do not need to ask permission to use this. When you are done with your cup, you can put it on the reception desk and we will clean and sanitize it.

2. CONNECT:
Your therapist will bring you to your private room. If you are working with Hanna, she will hand you a dual-language card to easily tap out your goals.

Once this is clear, your therapist will tell you whether to lie on your front or back under the sheet and then they will leave the room for you to undress and get under the sheet. They will knock in a few minutes to ask if they can come in. If you are ready, you can say “Yes” or “Ready”, if you are not you can say, “Wait” or “A Few More Minutes” or “I need more time”
WHAT TO WEAR: Typically, clients leave only their underwear on and remove their bra if they wear one. However, you should only undress to your exact personal comfort level. Your boundaries are respected here.
3. DURING YOUR MASSAGE
SECURE COVERAGE: You will slide completely under the grey top sheet and green blanket. Our practitioners only ever uncover the specific muscle group they are actively working on.
UPPER CHEST & MUSCLE CARE: Your therapist will safely uncover and massage your upper chest to release tension in the pectoral muscles, but your breasts and pelvic area remain completely and securely covered during 100% of your treatment.
THE PRIVACY WALL: When it is time for you to turn over halfway through your session, your therapist will hold up the large top sheet as a solid privacy wall, blocking all line of sight while you move.
3. REFRESH & PAY: After your session, help yourself to cool water at our filtered dispenser down the hall. Head to the front desk to complete payment and grab a post-session hydrator or smoothie!
