Trying a new therapy or entering an unfamiliar room can trigger sensory fatigue and anxiety, especially when you don’t know what to expect. This guide walks you through every detail of our Red Light Therapy room so you can feel completely prepared, in control, and comfortable before your session.

The Room Setup & Sensory Profile
When you enter the Red Light Therapy room, the environment is quiet, predictable, and fully adaptable to how you prefer to move or rest.
- The Lighting: The room features a main overhead light that is fully dimmable, allowing you to set the exact brightness that feels comfortable for your eyes before you start.
- Movement & Positioning (Your Choice): How you experience your session is entirely up to you. You can stand, stretch, or sit in front of the panels on the smooth rolling stool. If you prefer to rest, you can lie down on the treatment bed.
- The Treatment Bed Setup: The bed is prepared for maximum comfort, dressed with a fitted sheet, a warm flannel top sheet, and a plush blanket. Tucked comfortably underneath those layers is a PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field) mat, you won’t notice it during a standard session, as it remains turned off unless you’ve booked it as an add-on or separate service.
- The Panels: We feature two KALA medical-grade red light panels:
- KALA Red Light Elite: A tall, full-body panel to cover you from top to bottom.
- KALA Red Light Pro: A smaller panel for targeted focus.
- Noise Level: The light panels have a faint, rhythmic cooling fan sound (similar to white noise or a desktop computer). It is steady and non-intrusive, but feel free to bring noise-canceling headphones if you prefer total quiet.

What the Lights Look & Feel Like
Red light is warm, vivid, and UV-free. Here is what to expect visually and physically:
- Tanning Goggles Provided: We supply dark tanning goggles in the room. Because the panels are bright, wearing goggles keeps your eyes comfortable so you can fully relax.
- Near-Infrared (NIR) Wavelengths: The remote controls both visible Red Light and Near-Infrared (NIR) Light simultaneously. NIR light is invisible to the human eye. When both settings are running, it may look like certain rows or lines of bulbs are turned off or burnt out, this is completely normal! Those bulbs are emitting deep-penetrating NIR light that works beneath the surface.
- Heat Level: You will feel a soothing, gentle warmth against your skin, like resting in a patch of soft indoor sunlight, without intense heat or sweating.

Skin Prep: Why Clean Skin Matters (And Sunscreen Warning)
To get the most out of your session, bare, clean skin is ideal.
- Sunscreen Cancels Out Red Light: Sunscreen (especially mineral blocks containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) is specifically designed to reflect light wavelengths. Wearing sunscreen during your session will block the red and near-infrared light from penetrating your skin, effectively neutralizing the benefits of the therapy.
- Prep Recommendation: Make sure any target areas are free of heavy sunscreens, thick cosmetics, or light-blocking creams before your session. (Gentle face wipes are available if you need to cleanse off SPF or makeup beforehand.)

Proximity Guide: How Close Should You Stand or Sit?
How close you position yourself to the KALA panels depends entirely on your goals for the session:
- 6 to 12 Inches (Targeted Deep Relief): Ideal for deep-tissue support, sore joint/muscle recovery, or localized pain management. The light intensity is highest at this distance.
- 12 to 24 Inches (Full-Body & Systemic): Great for overall energy production, mood support, full-body relaxation, and collagen support. This allows the light to cover a broader surface area evenly.
- 24+ Inches (Gentle Sensory Exposure): Perfect if you have sensitive skin, are prone to light sensitivity, or want a low-stimulation, relaxing warm-up to ease into the therapy.
Why Red Light Therapy Works for Neurodivergent Bodies & Chronic Pain
For Autistic adults, ADHDers, and folks with chronic anxiety, the body is often running in a perpetual state of high nervous system arousal or autonomic dysregulation. Add in hypermobility (EDS/HSD), joint instability, or chronic inflammation, which frequently co-occur with neurodivergence, and the body works twice as hard just to stay regulated.
Photobiomodulation (Red and NIR Light Therapy) offers gentle, non-invasive support right down to the cellular level:
1. Cellular Energy & Fatigue Relief
Red and NIR light wavelengths interact directly with the mitochondria in your cells, stimulating the production of ATP (cellular energy). For neurodivergent individuals dealing with chronic fatigue, burnout, or the exhaustion of masking, this extra boost helps replenish depleted physical energy stores.
2. Soothing Hypermobile & Connective Tissue Pain
Hypermobility and joint laxity often lead to chronic micro-tears, muscle spasms, and localized inflammation. Near-Infrared light penetrates deep into muscle tissue, tendons, and joints, helping to:
- Reduce systemic and localized inflammation.
- Increase local blood flow and tissue oxygenation.
- Support collagen synthesis and speed up cellular repair.
3. Nervous System Down-Regulation
The warm, steady light helps shift the autonomic nervous system out of “fight-or-flight” (sympathetic state) and into “rest-and-digest” (parasympathetic state). Many people report feeling an immediate drop in baseline muscle tension and internal restlessness.
4. Zero Sensory-Overload Friction
Unlike traditional therapies that might involve cold gels, intense pressure, bright flickering screens, or unpredictable touch, Red Light Therapy is passive and friction-free. You decide the posture, distance, lighting, and sound environment.

Controlling Your Session & Timing
We want your time in the room to feel seamless and frustration-free.
- Using the Remote: The handheld remote turns on and controls both KALA panels together at the same time.
- Managing Your Time: The built-in timers on the panels can be finicky and tricky to program. To keep things simple and stress-free, we recommend two easy alternatives:
- Set a timer on your phone so you can relax without staring at the panel controls.
- Ask the front desk team when you check in! We are happy to keep time for you and give a gentle knock on the door when your session is finished.
Neurodivergent & Anxiety-Friendly Tips
- Arrive Early for Transition Time: Feel free to come 5–10 minutes early to sit in our reception area and ease into the space before your appointment.
- Bring Your Preferred Audio: You are welcome to play music, a podcast, or a guided meditation on your phone or through headphones during your session.
- Wear What Feels Good: Choose comfortable, easy-to-change clothing so getting ready before and after your session feels effortless.
- Move or Be Still: There is no “correct” posture. If sitting still feels under-stimulating or restless, feel free to stretch, shift positions, or stand during your time in front of the panels.
